A brief look back in time

The mobile phones as we come to use it daily have come about with constant innovation and development over the years to have arrived at the situation that it is now in.  It was not an overnight journey and the digital gateway did take evolution and development over the years to reach the present state.  As the technologies changed to keep pace with developments both in terms of hardware as well as the driving software, the parameters of operation too did change.  

Thus what in the early days was considered by many as non consequential came to be mainstream that people could not do without in each and every activity of life.  With this came about applications of the digital gateway that made secure systems possible that enabled commerce to be carried forth from the handset that most people carry these days.  

The initial fancy color screen displays became standard as was the more fancy ability of being able to access the web from the handsets. This was the beginning of mobile application development.

The changing paradigms

• Security: The initial handsets did not have anything by way of secure communication lines, so to speak.  This was primarily due to the very low key application of the mobile that would have meant storing of some phone numbers as a security concern.  But security and secure digital gateway became all common and accepted that it soon took over the major part of the operating situations.  

Additional features such as anti-viruses soon came to be installed in mobile phones too as the security angle came to be emphasized over and over again.  Thus what started off as a fancy use of mobile phones soon came to be an accepted way of life with people.  Often the need for security meant that huge sums of money were expended to maintain system integrity and security.  

• Ease of use: The shifting paradigms meant that it was no longer the young that could be the target customer of a smart phone or for that matter any mobile phone.  This meant that operations of the digital gateway must be simplified and kept simple as possible to enable the older folks to get the maximum utility with the technology as well.  Rarely do people have the time and patience to go through large bulky user manuals to arrive at solutions to a problem and hence a far more user friendly development of technology took place.  

• Affordability: There are more to being affordable when the digital gateway is considered.  The lowering of costs of mobile phones has meant that the technologies that go on to form the phones are using lowered costs of operation as well.  Else it might just occur that the applications would price themselves out of the market.  It is this hunt for cheaper and better integrated systems that gave rise to more common applications of the smart phone.  It should not be considered the status symbols that it once used to be.  

• Being modular: If a particular system need to have components to be developed completely from scratch, then it would be duplicity of work as well as make unnecessary efforts as well.  By being modular, digital gateways could be applied from one hand set to the other with minimal changes being made to them.  This very concept of being modular brought about not just convenience but at the larger level greater practicality.  It could be said that this is central to any development that is taking place in the electronics arena.

  
  
  

The key role of mobile technologies

If there is indeed an interface between electronics and application then it is to be found in the digital gateway of the present day communication networks.  The very demanding applications of technology coupled with the need to be cost effective to gain acceptance in the market has meant that applications were developed that would reduce cost at the same time involve least human interface.  

This is where autonomous technologies that can make changes to the system to be operating at peak efficiency at all times and occasions came to being.  Thus the traditional role of the digital gateway as mere interfaces took on new meanings and applications in use.  

It is primarily the improvements and developments in the application of software that can respond to situations that brought about the most developments to the digital arena.  No doubt, there have been significant changes in hardware used but more than the hardware the changes have come into being in the software of mobile application development

So it is safe to say that the changes in mobile application development were more radical in the software that drove the digital gateway than the hardware.  For the better part the hard ware went in for digitization and hence brought forth reduction in size of components more than anything else.  Principally energy consumed underwent drastic changes that meant different and far reaching application in the use of electronic systems in actual use.  

What does the future portend?

A lot has been read into Moore’s law and its common application with the developmental speed of technology.  But if there is a fair amount of certainty over anything, then it is that the future would be very different than what the best predictors would dare to come up with.  There has been and there will always be a surprise element in terms of where technology takes people.  

It is often that the digital gateway have been at the front of the mobile application development advancement and most probably it will remain so for the better part of the coming century and with applications those are yet to be thought of.  If twenty years or so back people thought the World Wide Web as being just elitist, they would not have been too off the mark.  But the range of applications of the web as we know it today would have surpassed every possible projection that could have been made then of its use and application.  Technology has always had the habit of making fools of the best soothsayers.
